My daughter Melanie was working on her Birding badge for Brownies so we all piled into the van and drove down to Frank Lake to see the early arrivals in the spring migration. Frank Lank is a naturalized wetland that was saved by Ducks Unlimited Canada and it is listed as an “Important Birding Area”. It is home to many species of birds year round, and it is one of the first places in Alberta that spring migrants rest at on their way north.
It was a very beautiful day on the prairies and it was fun to teach Melanie about some of the birds in the region. Andrew was a little less enthusiastic about the trip, except for the parts where snacks were involved. This is fairly typical for Andrew on road trips… Although we saw lots of Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, plenty of ducks, and quite a few hawks, for a while it seemed that there were more birders out and about than actual birds!
