The image was also included in a companion article in the Lifestyle section over at MSN Canada. "With all the engagements over the holiday season, and more coming with Valentine's Day, we're showcasing some brides who decided that great photos and an afternoon of laughs was worth ruining the most expensive dress they'd likely ever wear!" SmartBrideBoutique.com: Trash the Dress Photos: Vote for your Favorite MSN CA: How'd She Get Up There?! - 11 Amazing 'Trash the Dress' Photos The Story Behind the Image You may remember this image (or you should because I show it off all the time!) from a Wedding Dress "Trash the Dress" photography session that I did with my friends Lauren and Eddy a couple of years ago. To make a long story short, we hiked to the top of Cirque Peak in the Canadian Rocky Mountains for a photoshoot. The hike is a 16km round trip to the top of a 10,000 foot peak, and it is extremely difficult! Eddy and I carried lots of photography gear and Lauren carried her wedding dress in her backpack. She changed at the top of the mountain and we had a fantastic photoshoot. [...]

Chinook Outriders Motorcycle Club Photoshoot Redux

Last weekend I got together with the Ladies of the Chinook Outriders Motorcycle Club (the Calgary chapter of the Women in the Wind) for another photoshoot. Long time readers may remember that I created individual and group portraits for the same club last summer. We got some great results last year and they wanted to do it all over again this year. It has been a tough thing to schedule, but we finally managed to pull it off this past weekend. Last year the shoot was done at Fish Creek Park and the images all had trees with bright green leaves in the background. The images looked great but we wanted to do something a little different this year. We chose an industrial location and used the loading dock and red brick walls of the old Molson Brewery in Inglewood (more recently the West Key Storage building) as a backdrop. I really wanted to give them something striking and different and the industrial location helped with that. You will see from the following example images that I processed many of the images to really play up the grungy location that we used. Thanks again to all the members of the club that came out. It was great to meet all the new people who weren't at the portrait session last year, and very flattering that so many come back for a second year. I had lots of fun and I'm already cooking up some new ideas for the next one! All of the images have been uploaded to the Client Area of the website. Prints, digital files, and many other products (including our new line of Framed Prints) can all be ordered directly from the [...]

Charity & Bruce | Wedding Sneak Peek

The Wedding of Charity Derksen and Bruce Potter on August 20, 2011 I first met Charity this past winter a very cold day at River Park Dog Park. She brought her dog Lola to a pet portrait mini-session that I had arranged in partnership with Pawsitively Natural Dog Daycare. Although her session was pretty short (because we were all freezing), it was a beautiful day and the conditions for photography were great. I was excited by all of the images that I made for her. There was one shot in particular where everything came together with this incredibly soft and beautiful light and I knew that I had nailed it! I remember saying to myself "Oh... this could be good!" Fast forward a few months to the summer... I was checking my email one day when up pops a note from Charity asking for some pricing for photography for her upcoming wedding. I was instantly excited and very happy that she would consider using me for such an important day! I immediately thought back to that lovely winter day... We got together a couple of weeks ago for an engagement session. I love doing this kind of session because they are much more relaxed than the wedding day and it gives me and the couple a chance to get to know each other a little better before the big day. I love their engagement photos so much and it gave me some extra confidence that their wedding day was going to be perfect too! Thanks so much to both Charity and Butch, and to all of your family members, for allowing me to participate in this celebration. Your love for each other is easy to [...]

Derksen Potter Engagement Sessions

I had a beautiful engagement session with Charity and Bruce (and their dog Lola) at the Ranche recently. They are such a beautiful couple and the Ranche is one of my favorite places for photography. The place has so much going on that there ends up being a really wide variety of stuff to use as a backdrop for portraits. My two favorites are the walls of the red barn and the long grasses in the nearby fields. Charity and Bruce were both great sports and they were willing to try anything I asked for, which always makes my job easier! It was great to be able to spend a few minutes with the couple in a more relaxed setting before their upcoming wedding. Even though this event will be relatively small, weddings are always pressure packed and it's much nicer to get to know each other in a different atmosphere before the wedding. Thanks to Charity and Bruce for including me in their big day! I'm really looking forward to it!

REN Stampede Breakfast

This is an animated slideshow of photos and video created while doing some photography coverage of a Stampede Breakfast that I attended yesterday. The event was hosted by the Referral Exchange Network (REN**) in Calgary and was both a social event for the club members and a visitors day to try to introduce some new prospective members to the club. It was a really great event with lots of good food and beverages, some great musical entertainment, and plenty of laughs and conversations! Thanks to PM Gigs, Jones and Salt Insurance, and Apex Financial Consulting for sponsoring the event, and to the Groove Demonz for providing the tunes! **REN is a single profession business referral club that meets at lunch every Tuesday at the Carriage House Inn. The club is actively growing and always on the lookout for new members that have positive energy, are highly professional, and that are actively trying to grow their business. Please let me know if you're interested in learning more about the club?
